COVID-19 Mandate Lift for Healthcare Workers

Secretary Directions were introduced on 13 October 2022, mandating COVID-19 vaccination for healthcare workers in Victoria. The Department of Health has reviewed these directions in light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, new evidence, and updated guidance from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI). Based on this review, the department is now consulting with health service stakeholders on a proposal to revoke these vaccination requirements.

AEAV has been invited to provide feedback on behalf of Ambulance members by 23 August 2024. The government’s final decision will consider the review, stakeholder feedback, and human rights implications, with outcomes communicated to sector stakeholders.

Following consultations, AEAV has advised the department that it ensure ongoing access to COVID-19 vaccinations for on-road ambulance staff, with costs covered during work hours, and to provide the Novavax vaccine if available. Given the persistent threat of COVID-19 and influenza, AEAV has also called for a dedicated Infectious Diseases Leave to support healthcare workers.
